The brain sends out electrical signals at a rate of 6,000,000 impulses every second. These come back to the brain in the form of information. The brain has to adjust temperature, digestive enzymes, heart rate, fluid levels, hormone levels to name a few. The brain is very reliant on the information that is sent to it from the body. The brain continues to look for points of reference so that it can take a course of action. The Bowen move is so different that the brain therefore decides that it needs to investigate further. When the therapist leaves the room, the brain can then figure out what happened when the Bowen moves were made. The brain goes into an Alpha brainwave state and relaxes the body.
With the Bowen Technique, the approach is different so that it is not unusual for a client to walk out of the treatment room in about the same amount of pain as when they arrived. The process of treatment is an ongoing one and the healing is determined by the client's body and not the therapist.
After a Bowen treatment, the client will sometimes say they are feeling very tired or unwell for several days. Sometimes "flu-like" symptoms will appear. These are all normal and are a sign that the brain is pushing the body to a place where it can work with this new information. If you are not feeling well, you will likely go to bed and sleep. Sleeping is an ideal healing place for the body and it can work alot faster than when you are up and about.
Common reactions can be tiredness, stiffness and sore muscles, headaches. In a lot of cases, there are no reactions at all. If a headache is a reaction, it is a good indicator that the client is not drinking enough water. Old problems might re-emerge with aches and pains. Reactions are difficult to predict.
When we make a Bowen move in a certain area, the brain will ask questions of the body in order to take action it needs to take. The conversation between the brain and body may go something like this:
Brain: What was that?
Body: I'm not quite sure.
Brain: Okay, was it painful?
Body: No.
Brain: Was it hot or cold?
Body: No.
Brain: Were you nervous?
Body: No...and on and on.
It is very common for a Bowen therapist to re-enter the room and the client will say: "It felt like your hands were still there", or "I felt tingling go down my legs to my feet". This tells us that the brain is attempting to obtain more information so that it can effectively take a course of action.
We need to know when you feel any reactions so that we can let your body heal by allowing more time.
